The greenhouse is currently operating on a very limited basis from our
temporary site behind the rec center.

After the move to the new
greenhouse is completed, our summer focus will be on watering and
maintaining our current plants pending return to normal operations in the
fall.

Please note that the rec department requires at least two members be on
site any time that the greenhouse is open or when any club activities take
place.

This fall, the “Volunteer for Club Activities” Tab on this website will be
expanded to offer volunteer training and sign up for all crews via Sign Up
Genius.

New Greenhouse Construction

The old greenhouse has been removed and site preparation at Beardsley is underway.  The club hopes to move into the new greenhouse in the second half of May.

Since the club is responsible for providing the necessary interior furnishings and equipment for the greenhouse, a committee of club members is working under the leadership of Mike Anderson to research and purchase these items. Several items have been ordered and will be installed as soon as possible.

The club proposed the development of a botanical garden to encompass the Beardsley courtyard around the new greenhouse.  The garden will identify and showcase many desert plants.  The plans were approved, and a club committee under the direction of Jim Consolloy and Pat Wanta has started with initial planting and some arranging of the rocks and boulders in the retention ponds.

Greenhouse Crews

Monitors/Sales

Monitors meet and greet visitors to the greenhouse during open hours, provide
information about the club and its activities, assure compliance with rec department
policies, and complete daily plant sales..

Harvesting

The Harvesting Crew collects plants and plant trimmings from Sun City West residents’
homes upon request and transports them to the greenhouse site.

Soil

The Soil Crew mixes the special club soil recipe, bags it for sale and keeps the potting stations supplied with soil.

Potting

Using best practices for cactus planting, the potting crews inspect harvested plants,
trim them, and pot them for sale.

Large Cactus Potting

With extra hands required for potting of large cacti, this crew teams up to safely handle
potting of the large stock and disposes of organic and inorganic greenhouse waste in
accordance with the policies of the Beardsley Rec Center.

Container Gardens

Specialty potting of mini plants considering plant size, texture, and color along with an
artistic presentation creates decorative container gardens.

Merchandising

The Merchandising Crew provides consistent quality of our stock by identifying, labeling
and pricing the plants as well as monitoring the condition of the plants and creating
pleasing plant displays for our sales.

Watering

The watering folks test soil for moisture and keep plants properly watered weekly during
the winter and twice weekly in summer.

Watering crew training is available for new volunteers at the greenhouse on any Monday or Thursday during the summer.
